Cork Con FC J1 34 - 24 Newcastlewest RFC
Venue: NewcastlewestCompetition: Munster Junior Cup - 5th Round
Cork Constitution defeated Newcastlewest on Sunday, at the County Limerick venue, in the 5th Round of the Munster Junior Cup. After victories over Kinsale and Mallow from Divisions 2&3 in the previous rounds, they have now defeated a team from Division 1, as Newcastlewest are second to Clonmel in the top echelon of Munster Junior rugby.
Constitution settled quickly at the pleasant North Cork venue, and took the lead from a try by left wing Joe Harrington, converted by Niall Finn for 0-7 after 10 minutes. However, the home side quickly pulled back three points with a penalty on 15 minutes. And on the half-hour, they scored a try converted by their scrum-half for 10-7. But, Constitution restored their advantage with a try by Billy Crowley on 31 minutes, converted by Finn for 10-14. And Finn kicked a penalty before the break for 10-17 at half-time.
Another Finn penalty pushed Con’s advantage to 10-20 on 50 minutes. And from there to the finish Constitution were never really troubled, as they added further tries by Barry Galvin and Cathal O’Flaherty, both converted by Finn, to lead 10-34 after 72 minutes.
The home side did hit back with a spirited effort, scoring two converted tries, but Constitution advanced on a 24-34 score line to the 6th Round, in which they will meet Clonmel who defeated Kilfeacle 20-11.
In another 5th Round tie, Cashel defeated UCC 27-17.Referee:
