Cork Con FC 1st XV 25 - 25 UCD
Venue: BelfieldCompetition: Ulster Bank League Division 1A
Cork Constitution and University College Dublin played out a draw in an an exciting Ulster Bank League game at the Belfield Bowl on Sunday afternoon. Seven tries were scored in an end-to-end match, and in the end the points were shared, though Constitution claimed a bonus point for their four tries.
UCD drew first blood after just two minutes when hooker Risteard Byrne finished off a fine break by UCD impressive centre Gary Ringrose. Liam Bourke converted, but he missed a penalty opportunity before Gerry Hurley got Constitution on the board with a penalty on 12 minutes.
In the 27th minute, a deliberate knock down by Constitution was penalised, and Bourke kicked the penalty for 10-3 to UCD. And just before the break it got worse for Constitution as Sam Coughlan- Murray got in for an unconverted try that left the students 15-3 to the good.
In the 48th minute a clever cross-kick by Johnny Holland was gathered by Rob Jermyn and he scored wide on the left. Gerry Hurley kicked a great conversion, but Bourke had a penalty for UCD two minutes later to move the score to 18-10 for UCD.
The Constitution pack were excellent on the day and none better than Graeme Lawler. He brought his side back into the game with a brace of tries in the 55th and 65th minutes. The first, when a line-out from 15 metres was driven to the line; and the second, when he broke off a maul near the line. Unfortunately, Gerry Hurley missed both conversions, striking a post with the second attempt. In a comic moment later, the Con Captain vented his frustration at the Referee Paton’s decision making, who took in good form.
The industrious Constitution No.8 Luke Cahill earned the try-bonus point with his side’s fourth try in the 72nd minute following a 5 metre scrum. The conversion was again missed, but Constitution led 25-18 going into the final minutes. However, UCD were nothing if not adventurous throughout, and good mid-field play saw full back Billy Dardis score his sides third try in the 82nd minute. Bourke nailed the conversion to tie up the scores, and end a very exciting match with honours even.Referee:
