Cork Con FC J1 17 - 10 Kilfeacle
Venue: Musgrave Park
Competition: Munster Junior Cup
Match Report:

Cork Constitution qualified for the Munster Junior Cup final after a close encounter with Kilfeacle at Musgrave Park on Sunday. In a well contested match, it was the accuracy of replacement out half Simon Barry that made the difference, as he slotted four penalties to add to Paddy O’Connell’s first half try. Barry replaced the injured Peter O’Sullivan after 15 minutes and proved his worth with a steady performance allied to his place kicking successes.

Peter O’Sullivan suffered a thigh injury following a missed penalty on 15 minutes. Kilfeacle took the lead with a penalty by Shane Looby in the 23rd minute, but Barry equalised in the 30th minute with his first penalty. Five minutes later he gave Constitution the lead with a second penalty. Paddy O’Connell scored his try after 38 minutes when he finished a fine move down the left wing by Conor Desmond and Cyrpien Jouve. Looby missed a penalty opportunity in the 40th minute to leave Con leading 11-3 at the break.

Five minutes into the second period Looby cut through from a set piece inside the Con 22 metre line and added the points for an opportunist riposte. Barry kicked his third penalty on the hour to stretch Con’s lead to 14-10. Cathal Quinn playing at full back, in Robert Clune’s absence through injury, made a spectacular run form his own 22 metre line in the 73rd minute to bring pay inside the Kilfeacle 22 line, and from the subsequent play Simon Barry kicked his fourth penalty .

The forward exchanges throughout were intense, even if the back play was disappointing, and the Constitution pack, ably led by captain Garret Murray, more than matched their opponents. David O’Mahony and Simon Hanbidge won a succession of line out possession and the pack made valuable yards to give the half backs a platform to keep the pressure on a gallant Kilfeacle side.

In the final, scheduled for Musgrave Park on Sunday 24th April, Constitution will play Munster Junior League Division 1 winners, Cashel, who have already qualified for the All Ireland League next season .
