Cork Constitution scored a dramatic victory over St Mary’s College in the quarter final of the All Ireland Fraser McMullen Cup at Temple Hill on Saturday. Constitution led 13-8 at the interval, but trailed 13-21 mid-way in the second half, before mounting a great comeback that saw them score a try to come within a point and then add a penalty for the lead.
Cian McGovern kicked a penalty after 5 minutes to give Constitution the lead. Three minutes later Simon Hanbidge scored a try and McGovern added the points for an 8-0 advantage. McGovern and St Mary’s exchanged penalties before St Mary’s closed the gap with a try by scrum half Chris Lilly after 33 minutes, leaving the half time score at 13-8 to Constitution.
St Mary’s dominated the third quarter scoring two penalties and an intercept try by winger Ciaran Collins, converted by Toal Lenno, to lead 21-13 after 59 minutes. But Constitution hit back quickly and Darragh Dunne scored a try in the 62nd minute with McGovern adding the extras to leave a point between the sides. Five minutes later McGovern kicked the winning penalty. Constitution had to withstand a strong effort by the visitors, before going forward to the semi final, in which they will meet another Dublin side, Lansdowne, who defeated UCC.Referee:
