Cork Constitution J1 XV advanced to the Munster Junior Cup quarter final after a tough struggle with Richmond at the canal bank venue in Limerick. Constitution led 13-3 at half time, but the home side fought back to close the gap to four points two minutes into injury time. Constitution then had to withstand six further minutes of unrelenting pressure before victory was assured.
From the start Constitution set a hot pace for the Junior League side, and Peter O’Sullivan put them ahead with a penalty after 5 minutes. Daragh Frawley equalised for Richmond with a penalty on 15 minutes, but Peter O’Sullivan restored Con’s lead with a similar effort after 20 minutes. Con had a number of try scoring opportunities before finally getting the first try after 25 minutes. Alan Ross started the move with a good return from his own half; Ryan Hassan carried it on, before Cathal Quinn broke on the left and set up Conor Desmond to put down at the posts. O’Sullivan kicked the conversion for 13-3. Richmond missed a late penalty chance before the break.
Richmond had winger McNamara sin-binned in the 42nd minute, and both sides missed penalty chances, before the Richmond pack forced a penalty try from a scrummaging offence in the 60th minute. Frawley added the points to leave three points between the teams. Con had Bryan Cagney was sin-binned in the 63rd minute, but Richmond missed the placed-kick opportunity. Peter O’Sullivan kicked a penalty for Con
in the 71st minute, and when Simon Hanbidge finished a great passing movement for a try in the corner, Con looked safe at 21-10. However, Richmond roared back and after sustained pressure, Stephen Clancy got onto a grubber kick behind the Con defence to secure a try two minutes into injury time. Jeff McNamrara landed the conversion to set up the final anxious minutes for Con, but their defence withstood the pressure to end another classic Munster Junior Cup encounter.
Constitution will meet the winners of Garryowen v Thomond in the quarter final at Temple Hill on 13th March.Referee:
