Cork Con FC 1st XV 20 - 18 University College Cork
Venue: MardykeCompetition: All Ireland League Div.1
Cork Constitution and University College Cork met at the Mardyke on Friday evening for the third time this season, but for their first match ever in the All Ireland League.
Constitution had won the two September matches in the Charity and Munster Cups, the latter by a single point, both played at Temple Hill, but an All-Ireland League encounter would be a new experience. And to play such a match at the iconic home of rugby in Cork would be extra special for players and supporters alike.
And the match did not disappoint, as a titanic struggle ended with Constitution just about claiming the spoils by the narrowest of margins. College played in to the river-end for the opening half, but Constitution got the first score at the Mardyke-end with an unconverted try by prop Vincent O’Brien in the 9th minute. College hit back with a penalty by James Taylor in the 15th minute for 3-5. But Constitution added a penalty on 20 minutes by D.A.Moynihan from the 22 metre line. Both sides had chances thereafter, but it was Constitution who took the interval honours with a try by Jason Higgins, converted by Moynihan for 3-15.
A penalty by James Taylor on 43 minutes kept the students in touch, and an unconverted try in the corner by wing Adam O’Connor brought College to 11-15 in the 48th minute, accompanied by a yellow card for Constitution full back Liam O’Connell. And when a loose ball was hacked to the line, Michael Clune claimed a try, converted by Taylor, to give College the lead at 18-15 after 57 minutes.
Taylor missed a penalty chance on the hour mark, but Constitution kept their composure, and in the final minute, they created a scoring chance in the left corner, when Greg Higgins touched down after Moynihan cleverly created an opening. The conversion was missed, but Constitution escaped with the match pointsk to keep their challenge for AIL honours on track.Referee:
