Cork Con FC 1st XV 11 - 11 Garryowen
Venue: DooradoyleCompetition: All Ireland League Div.1A
Cork Constitution and Dolphin shared the points at Dooradoyle after an entertaining and hard fought encounter. However, Constitution will regret letting a winning lead slip after conceding a touchline penalty in the last minute that was converted to tie up the scores.
Tom Gleeson and Ivan Dineen were partnered at centre, while former Garryowen scrum half Gerry Hurley made his debut for Constitution. Former captain, Brendan Cuttriss returned after a long injury lay-off, with the youthful Cathal O’Flaherty and Simon Hanbidge in the pack also.
Full back Lorcan Bourke gave Garryowen a tonic start with a fine try in the left corner from their first attack. Declan Cusack missed the conversion but struck a penalty on 8 minutes to give the home side a handy lead. Gerry Hurley kicked a penalty after 17 minutes as Constitution settled to their task. Further penalty chances were missed by both sides before the break to leave Garryowen leading 8-3.
Constitution had the bright setting sun to their backs in the second period but handling errors persisted and a number of opportunities were lost. Sean Scanlon made a break from his own 22 on the hour mark and Cronan Healy almost finished the move. A series of scrums ensued at the Garryowen line and Brian Hayes forced his way over eventually to level the scores. Con raised the tempo and took the lead from a Gerry Hurley penalty after 70 minutes. They looked to have the points secured, but as they were playing out time, a penalty was awarded at a maul on the touchline, and Cusack tied up the scores with the last kick of the game.
Constitution remain in second place on 20 points, behind Old Belvedere on 23 points who defeated Dolphin 15-12 at Musgrave Park.Referee:
