Cork Con FC 1st XV 18 - 17 Highfield
Venue: Model Farm RoadCompetition: Junior 2 League Phase 2 Play-off
Cork Constitution again defeated Highfield by the narrowest margin in their fourth play-off game of the Junior 2 League Phase 2, under lights at Model Farm Road on a dry and crisp Friday evening. Last week they also had a narrow victory, 9-8 at Templehill.
Simon Barry gave Constitution a 2nd minute lead from a penalty after early pressure at a 5 metre scrum. And Constitution scored again in the 6th minute, when No.8 Cormac Fouhy touched down, with Barry adding the conversion for 10-0. However, penalties by Dara O’Keeffe in the 8th and 11th minutes, and again in the 20th minute kept the home side well in the game.
Constitution went 13-9 with another Barry penalty in the 34th minute, however, Highfield took the half time honours with an unconverted try just before the break for 13-14.
Barry missed a penalty chance for Constitution on 53 minutes, before O’Flynn gave Highfield a four point advantage with a 74th minute penalty. However, Constitution stuck at the task and were rewarded when Michael Coughlan touched down from a maul in the 82nd minute. The conversion was missed, but Constitution had scored a one-point victory.
It was Constitution’s fourth play-off victory, having previously defeated Bandon and Dolphin, whom they must meet again in the next two weeks.Referee:
