Cork Con FC J1 19 - 21 University College Cork
Venue: The Farm, CurraheenCompetition: Munster Seconds League
UCC J1 XV reversed the early season result in their return Seconds League fixture, under lights at Curraheen Road on Monday evening. Leading 21-12 at half time, they contained a late surge by Constitution, to claim a narrow victory.
The students took a 5th minute lead with a smart try by out half Stuart Logier, who found a gap through the middle of the Con defence. Last season’s Constitution Under 20 star, Andrew Dorgan converted for 7-0. Constitution fought back in the next 10 minutes, and forced a try by Rory Horgan in the left corner, but the conversion failed.
College forced the pace, and scored in the 25th minute through centre Hyde, converted by Dorgan; and Dorgan scored the third try with a steal from a 22 metre scrum, and added the conversion, for 21-5 to College on the half-hour mark.
Constitution narrowed that lead with a try by scrum-half Jason Higgins from a 5 metre scrum, and Dara Lyons converted for 12-21 at the break.
The second half was well-contested, but with few scoring chances engineered by either side. Eventually, Shane Daly found a mid-field gap for a fine Constitution score in the 70th minute. Dara Lyons’ conversion closed the gap to two points, but College did enough to see out time for a two point victory.
