Venue: Templeville RoadCompetition: Ulster Bank All-Ireland League - Division 1
Cork Constitution defeated St Mary’s College in the opening game of their All-Ireland League campaign at Templeville Road on Saturday. A fourth minute try by Rob Jermyn set them on their way; they led 12-3 at the break, and consolidated that advantage with a try by Conor Kindregan within a minute of the restart. However, St Mary’s fought back to within a point, before Tomas Quinlan kicked an injury-time penalty to secure the victory.
Constitution started with debutantes, Shane Daly at full back, and Evan Mintern and Darren O’Shea in the pack, and early pressure on the St Mary’s line yielded a 4th minute try for Rob Jermyn. St Mary’s were well in the game thereafter, but were off-target with a couple of penalty chances, before Constitution extended their lead in the 33rd minute with a try under the posts by Liam O’Connell, following a break from half-way by Conor Kindregan. Tomas Quinlan slotted the conversion for 12-0, but Mary’s got three points back just before the break, when Sean Kearns kicked a penalty; 12-3 to the visitors at half-time.
Constitution started the second period with a decisive try by Conor Kindregan, who finished a break from half-way by Rob Jermyn for 17-3. Kearns kicked a penalty for Mary’s in the 52nd minute when Ger Sweeney was sin-binned; but otherwise Constitution survived that ten minutes, and also with Kindregan in the bin from the 60th minute.
However, Mary’s did strike back with a try at the posts by Kearns in the 70th minute, and his conversion closed the score to 17-13. Two minutes later the same player kicked a penalty to close to a point, however, Constitution saw out time and an injury-time penalty by Quinlan closed the scoring.Referee:
