Cork Con FC 1st XV 24 - 0 UCD
Venue: UCDCompetition: Bateman Cup Semi-final
Cork Constitution scored a very good win over UCD, the current AIB League leaders, with an emphatic result at Belfield on Saturday, and in the process are a step away from recording an unprecedented four Bateman Cup titles in as many years. After this result, they will face Galwegians, victors over Ballynahinch in the other semi final, in an end of season final.
Constitution looked on key from the outset at the sunny, but frosty, Belfield Bowl all-weather surface. But for a missed pass on the UCD line in the 2nd minute they would have taken an early lead. However, they did take the lead in the 6th minute when Brian Hayes touched down from a maul driven to the line. Tomas Quinlan kicked the conversion for 7-0 and a perfect start.
A kick ahead, and follow up, yielded a second try for Hayes on 15 minutes, and the conversion by Quinlan pushed Constitution out to 14-0. That was the score at half-time, and despite a yellow card for Niall Kenneally in the 46th minute, Constitution continued to dominate, and capitalised with a Tomas Quinlan penalty in the 52nd minute, when a UCD player was sin-binned.
The result was closed off in the 60th minute when James Ryan touched down from another maul to the UCD line. Quinlan’s conversion was again successful for 24-0, and Constitution saw out time relatively comfortably, to reach their fourth Bateman Cup final in as many years.Referee:
