Cork Con FC J1 36 - 8 Mallow
Venue: MahonCompetition: Munster Junior Cup 1st Rd
Cork Constitution J1 XV secured a clear-cut win over Mallow in the Munster Junior Cup 1st round tie, played at Mahon, as a result of both Mallow and Constitution’s first pitches being unplayable.
The match was played in mild, but difficult underfoot conditions, and credit to both sides for an entertaining game. Constitution had the better of the opening play, led 16-3 at the break, and never took the foot off the pedal, adding three further second-half tries.
Eoin Lacey opened Con’s account with a penalty on 15 minutes, and he added the extras to a try by Sean Gray in the 20th minute. Two further penalties by Lacey had Constitution 16 points to the good, before Mallow had a penalty just before the break.
Full back Joe White scored a fine unconverted try in the right corner in the 53rd minute, and Sonny Dwyer had Constitution’s third try on the hour with a break from 30 yards. Jamie Murphy added the conversion and kicked a penalty in the 70th minute for 31-3.
Conor O’Donovan had a consolation try for Mallow in the 75th minute, after Johnny Forrest had set up the chance with a crunching tackle.
However, Constitution had the final say with a try when Greg Roche picked up and barged his way through the tiring Mallow pack.
In the second round Constitution have a home tie against UL-Bohemian who defeated Fethard.Referee:
