Cork Con FC 1st XV 19 - 19 UCD
Venue: TemplhillCompetition: Ulster Bank League
Cork Constitution and University College Dublin played out an exciting drawn Ulster Bank League tie at Templehill on Saturday. The match was in the balance right to the final whistle, and a share of the points was probably a fair result.
Darren Sweetnam gave Constitution a first minute lead when he chased down a clearance from his own half by Tomas Quinlan, and gained possession to score at the posts. Quinlan added the conversion for a tonic start for the home side.
However, UCD attacked immediately and from possession in the Constitution 22, full back Barry Daly stepped the home defence for an unconverted try in the 5th minute.
UCD always threatened when in possession, but the home defence stood firm, and at the other end, when penalty chances were awarded, Tomas Quinlan was unerring with successful conversions in the 24th, 27th and 32nd minutes, to give his side a 16-5 interval advantage.
Quinlan added to Constitution’s tally in the 53rd minute, when UCD were penalised in preventing a quick throw to a line-out. However, UCD were never out of the game and after a siege on the home line, scrum half Nick McCarthy picked his way over in the 64th minute. Bourke converted for 19-12.
The outcome was decided in the 68th minute, when referee Fitzgibbon awarded a penalty try to the students for what appeared to be an obstruction offence on the UCD scrum half, for which flanker James Murphy was sin-binned. Bourke’s conversion tied up the scores.
There was still time for an exciting finish as Constitution stormed the student’s line. First Quinlan was unlucky to see a drop goal attempt just fade wide of the posts, and in the 74th minute Darren Sweetnam appeared to have won the game for the home side when he intercepted and ran to the posts. However, after an intervention by a touch judge the score was disallowed, and so the game ended all-square.
The day’s results leave Constitution in 8th place, still without a win after four games.Referee:
