Cork Con FC U20 18 - 6 NUIG-Corinthians
Venue: Corinthian Park, GalwayCompetition: Under 20 Donal Walsh Trophy Div.1 Play-offs
Cork Constitution continued their successful Under 20 campaign in the Under 20 Donal Walsh Trophy with their fourth successive victory. In doing so, they have consolidated their position at the top of the table, with just one game remaining.
In difficult conditions in Galway, they led 6-3 at half time after playing into the strong wind; and then in the second half they controlled play, scoring two tries in the fourth quarter to register an important win in the context of the tournament.
J.J.O’Neill and Jason Higgins played a vital role in the success as they replaced regular half backs, Tomas Quinlan and Andrew Dorgan, who were required for senior team duty. In the event they controlled play throughout, keeping their team on the front foot. Joe White kicked an excellent penalty against the wind in the 6th minute to give Constitution the lead, but NUIG equalised in the 22nd minute, and took the interval lead with a second penalty just before the break.
White drew Constitution level in the 46th minute with his second penalty. The Constitution pack were to the fore, and on the hour mark they were rewarded when Vincent O’Brien got the touchdown as they mauled to the line. Five minutes before the end, No.8 Michael Murphy made the game safe when he scored from a pick up from a scrum and powered over, and Joe White converted.
Next Saturday at Templehill, Constitution meet UL-Bohemian in the final game of the play-offs, before going on to the knock-out stage.Referee:
