Cork Con FC 1st XV 6 - 3 Young Munster
Venue: Greenfields
Competition: AIB All Ireland League
Match Report:

Cork Constitution gained a modicum of revenge when defeating Young Munster at Tom Clifford Park on Saturday afternoon. Young Munster had prevailed in the first game at Temple Hill in November. On that occasion Young Munster won a hard fought try-less encounter 9-6, and Saturday’s game was again try-less, with Constitution winning the penalty shoot-out 2-1.

The first half was scoreless, but Constitution were fortunate in that they had prop forward Ger Sweeney sin-binned in the 18th minute, necessitating flanker James Murphy being replaced by Aidan Slattery for the duration. However, Young Munster were not able to capitalise as Constitution’s defence proved adequate, and Gearoid Lyons missed two penalty opportunities for the home side before the break.

Darragh Lyons gave Constitution the lead with his first shot at goal in the 43rd minute, which his namesake equalised in the 58th minute to level the scores.

The were few chances to either side in the final quarter, but replacement out half Tomas Quinlan landed the winning penalty in the final minutes for a courageous win for the visitors.

The victory keeps Constitution within the top four places, but they are now 16 points behind leaders Lansdowne.
