Cork Con FC 1st XV 13 - 34 Ballynahinch
Venue: BallynahinchCompetition: Ulster Bank League Division 1A
Cork Constitution ran into a proper storm in their return Ulster Bank League tie with Ballynahinch at Ballymacarn Park on Saturday, as the home side used the advantage of the second half elements to cruise to a comfortable victory.
Constitution led 13-10 at half time, but will have feared that they did not take enough from the play, having had the benefit of the strong down-field breeze. A try by Gerry Hurley converted by Tomas Quinlan, who also added two penalties accounted for Con’s total. However, Ballynahinch full back, Adam Craig scored a try, and last season’s Constitution Cup hero Chris Quinn, playing with his home side again this season, kicked the conversion and a penalty against the wind, to set up a formidable task for the visitors in the second half.
And as it turned out, Constitution could make little headway against a very committed home side, who took full advantage to run in three second half tries and secure a bonus point victory. The strong running Adam Craig added two tries to his first half effort, and wing Ross Adair completed the rout for the home side. Quinn converted all four tries, and added a second penalty for good measure, to leave Ballynahinch clear winners.
The win lifts Ballynahinch to fifth place on 30 points, just one point behind Constitution, after twelve games. And having won the Ulster Cup before Christmas, they will be serious contenders for ultimate Cup and League honours in the months ahead.
For Constitution, after a run of seven wins and two draws, they will look to the next game to get back to winning ways, and since that game is the Munster Senior Cup final against Garryowen in two weeks time, they will not need much more motivation.Referee:
