Cork Con FC 1st XV 21 - 7 Terenure College
Venue: LakelandsCompetition: AIB All Ireland League
Cork Constitution scored a fine win over a very competitive Terenure College side at Lakelands, Dublin, on Saturday, to record their sixth win from eleven games in the Ulster Bank League. They are now on 31 points, two behind second placed Terenure College, but nine points behind table toppers Lansdowne, who had a narrow 21-20 home win over Old Belvedere.
The Constitution team showed one change from their last outing against Dolphin on December 19th, Luke Duffy started at centre in place of the injured Michael Keyes, with Ned Hodson starting on the replacement bench after missing four matches through injury.
Played in calm and dry conditions, Constitution edged the first half with two penalties kicked by Tomas Quinlan in the 29th and 40th minutes, to lead 6-0 at the break.
Constitution lost a try scoring chance in the early minutes of the second period, when they failed to touch down from a maul to the line. Then at the other end, the Terenure forwards made no mistake on the hour mark, when hooker Rob Smyth touched down from a similar effort. Mark O’Neill kicked the conversion for a 7-6 lead. Five minutes later, Tomas Quinlan had Constitution back in front from his third successful penalty, making it 9-7 to Constitution.
A couple of yellow cards followed, one to each side, as the tempo increased. Then Gerry Hurley pushed Constitution into the driving seat, when he followed up a punt to the line, and gathered for a try at the posts. Tomas Quinlan converted for 16-7, with 10 minutes remaining.
Two minutes later Constitution made the game safe, when Hurley put in another telling grubber kick to the line, and this time Quinlan nipped in, to gather and score. The conversion was missed, but Constitution comfortably saw out the final eight minutes for a fine victory.Referee:
