Cork Con FC J1 13 - 10 Highfield
Venue: Temple HillCompetition: Seconds League
Cork Constitution won their crucial last league game against Highfield at Temple Hill on Sunday, and thereby retained the South Munster Seconds League title. Highfield put up stern resistance throughout, but Constitution just edged it over the eighty minutes.
The first round game at Woodleigh Park had a high scoring outcome in favour of the home side by 30-12, but this was a more thorough examination of defences that stood up well to scrutiny. Constitution steadily built a thirteen point lead in the first half. Brian Derham struck a penalty after 8 minutes for Constitution. Two tries before the break gave Con a cushion for the second half. First Cathal Quinn finished a good three-quarter movement, and just before half time, Eoin O’Donnell finished another fine move in the corner. Neither try was converted, but Con had earned a 13-0 lead.
Highfield hit back with a penalty by Colm Downes in the 49th minute. And when No.8 Marc Murphy scored ten minutes later, Downes converted, it set the scene for a very intensive final quarter. In the event Constitution controlled that period and were worthy of the champion’s title.
Padraig Higgins presented the trophy to the winning captain Andy White, and both sides can now look forward to the play-off stages with their North Munster counterparts.
