Cork Con FC 1st XV 14 - 20 Garryowen
Venue: TemplehillCompetition: Ulster Bank League
Garryowen gained revenge for their Munster Senior Cup defeat when they returned to Temple Hill and gained a solid Ulster Bank League victory.
In a lacklustre first half Constitution took the lead with two Johnny Holland penalties in the first quarter, but Garryowen hit back and scored a try through prop Rory Brosnan. Con had failed to clear and from a 5 metre line out, the Garryowen pack proved the stronger and drove over the line. Geoff Ryan added the conversion and kicked a penalty in the 22nd minute. Garryowen held that lead to half time.
Cronan Healy, who has returned for the second half of the season from Australia, gave Con good field position in the 49th minute, and from the line out they moved the ball to mid-field where Graeme Lawler created the opening for Andrew O’Driscoll to score. Holland kicked the conversion for 11-10.
The lead only lasted three minutes, as Garryowen scored from a sustained attack on the right wing when full back Ronan O’Mahony went in for the try. Ryan converted. In the 62nd minute Cronan Healy was called back for a forward pass when a try seemed certain, and two minutes later the Con pack mauled over the line, but did not register. However, Holland closed the gap with a penalty in the 68th minute.
Thereafter, Con threw all they had at the Garryowen defence to no avail, and when Graeme Lawler was penalised for a high tackle, Ryan completed the scoring from the resultant penalty.
