Cork Con FC 1st XV 15 - 23 UL-Bohemian
Venue: AnnacottyCompetition: Ulster Bank League – Division 1A
UL-Bohemian scored a decisive win over Cork Constitution at Annacotty, Limerick, on Saturday. Leading 13-3 at the interval from a penalty and penalty try, they scored two second half try to stretch the lead to 23-8, and only a late opportunist try by Constitution put some respect on the score line.
The respective out-halves, J.J.Hanrahan and Scott Deasy, exchanged penalties in the first quarter to leave the early exchanges level. However, on the half hour UL made a decisive break-through when referee Gallagher awarded a penalty try. The first half scrums were untidy and when an attacking UL scrum was wheeled, he awarded the try, though it scarcely looked that a try would result. Hanrahan added the easy conversion for 10-3, and a further penalty in the 40th minute, after Constitution full back Darragh Lyons was rather harshly sin-binned for an offside offence.
There was a 15 minute hold up in the 32nd minute, when Constitution replacement flanker, Brendan Cuttriss, received a serious injury. Medical attention was required, and he was transferred to hospital where he was detained overnight. Fortunately, his condition improved and he was to be released home on Sunday.
UL made a very good start to the second half, and were rewarded with a fine try in the left corner by Mossie Lawlor, though Constitution’s line tackling was somewhat lax, as the ball was taken through a number of phases to set up the score. Darragh Lyons gave Constitution some hope with a smart try in the 70th minute, when he latched onto Scott Deasy’s grubber to the line. However, UL snuffed out their hopes immediately when wing Martin McPahil scored in the right corner in the four minutes later for 23-8.
Robert Clune got a fine try in the final minute, converted by Deasy, to leave the final score at 23-15 to the home side.Referee:
