Cork Con FC 1st XV 21 - 23 St Mary’s College
Venue: Temple Hill
Competition: Ulster Bank League Division 1A21
Match Report:

St Mary’s College kept their Ulster Bank League title hopes alive with a narrow win over Cork Constitution at Temple Hill on Saturday. They bridged an eight point deficit in the final quarter to take the lead for the first time in the game with a 76th minute penalty by Gavin Dunne. However, they still have two tough encounters to negotiate against Clontarf and Young Munster before they can claim the title.

Gerry Hurley kicked a penalty to give Constitution the lead after 26 minutes, but Dunne equalised with a penalty on 33 minutes. Just on half time, Niall O’Driscoll snapped up a pass on the left wing and ran in for a try from 30 metres, to give Constitution an 8-3 advantage.

On the resumption, Gerry Hurley, who did not have the best of fortune with his place kicks on the day, missed a penalty chance, and then failed to add the points to an excellent second try by Niall O’Driscoll in the 43rd minute. Meanwhile Gavin Dunne was successful with a penalty in the 48th minute, and added the points to a try by prop Rob Sweeney in the 52nd minute, to tie up the scores at 13 points each.

Gerry Hurley kicked a penalty for the lead in the 56th minute after a dangerous tackle on Sean Scanlon, and when James Ryan scored in the 62nd minute, Constitution looked in command at 21-13. Unluckily Hurley’s conversion attempt rebounded from the post. However, St Mary’s fought back and centre Steve Grissing was awarded a try, despite a doubt about a pass in the lead up. Dunne added the conversion and kicked the winning points in the final minutes, after Sean Scanlon was harshly yellow-carded for not releasing in the tackle.

Despite gaining a losing bonus point, Constitution slip to fifth in the table behind Lansdowne, who had a bonus point win over Young Munster.
