A large holiday crowd attended the annual Crowley Cup game at Temple Hill on St Stephen’s Day and were rewarded with a very competitive encounter. Constitution led 10-6 at half time but did not close the game out until the final minutes
Brian Kingston opened the scoring with a penalty for College after 7 minutes. Gerry Hurley drew Constitution level after 20 minutes with a penalty, but from the kick off his side were penalised and Kingston edged College ahead from the placed kick. Constitution scored the first try in the 25th minute. Cathal Quinn started the attack from his own 22 metre line, Johnny Holland carried on the move on the left wing before full back Danny O’Shea finished in style. Gerry Hurley added the extras for the half time lead.
Gerry Hurley added to Con’s lead with second half penalties as both sides used the rolling substitute facility with regular changes. Cathal Quinn confirmed Con’s superiority with a fine try in the final minute. Replacement out half Sean Murphy, who made quite an impact, added the conversion to close the scoring.
John Crowley was on hand to present the Derry Crowley Memorial Cup to Constitution captain Garret Murray.Referee:
