Report:

Cork Constitution Junior 2 XV completed the round robin series of the Junior 2 League at Templehill on Friday evening, with a clear-cut win against Bandon, to claim the Junior 2 South League trophy.

Bandon took an early lead with a 5th minute penalty by Aidan Sheehan. But Constitution hit back, to take the lead with a 13th minute try by James Tyner in the right corner that was expertly converted by Simon Barry. Bandon scored an unconverted try in the 26th minute to keep the game alive. The try was unconverted, as Constitution led 12-8 at the break.

And Constitution stretched their lead in the 53rd minute with a third try, touched down by Robin O’Flynn, following fast ruck ball by the pack. Barry’s conversion brought the score to 19-8. Within minutes Constitution repeated the score with O’Flynn again the scorer, and Constitution closed out an emphatic victory with a try in the 70th minute by Luke Abbott, with Simon Barry adding the conversion for good measure.

Report:

Cork Constitution defeated Highfield by the narrowest margin in the third game of the Junior 2 League Phase 2, under lights at a rain-sodden Temple Hill on Friday evening.

No.8 George French gave Highfield a great start with a 5th minute unconverted try. However, Constitution hit back immediately with a penalty on 8 minutes by Simon Barry; and Barry kicked a second penalty on 20 minutes for the half-time lead at 6-5.

The weather deteriorated in the second period, as heavy rain made the conditions very difficult for continuity. And scoring chances were thus limited to a 51st penalty by Darragh O’Keeffe for Highfield, and a third penalty for Constitution by Robin O’Flynn that proved to be the winning points.

Dolphin were on top in the first period and led 17-0 at the break. However, while Constitution had somewhat the better of the second half exchanges, their only reward was a try by Doug Abbott. And an unfortunate injury to Gavin Brooks in the second period did not help Constitution’s cause.

Cork Constitution J2 XV recorded a bonus point win over Muskerry at Ballyanly on Sunday in the J2 League. However, though leading 18-3 at half-time, they had to endure a strong second half by the home side before emerging with the points.

Dave Hayes scored the opening try for Constitution in the 7th minute, while Muskerry opened their account with a penalty four minutes later. Eoin Derham doubled Con’s advantage with a try on 16 minutes for 10-3.

Cork Constitution J2 XV won the Dennehy Cup on Sunday morning at Model Farm Road against the host club.

The match was played in a constant drizzle making accurate play difficult, but Constitution made light of the conditions to lead 12-6 at the interval. Report:

Cork Constitution J2 XV finally got their season underway at Musgrave Park on Sunday morning with an exciting win over Dolphin in the Dennehy Cup semi-final. They had received a first round walk-over from UCC last week.

They started well on the pristine back pitch at Musgrave Park and had built a 13-7 lead by half-time. However, Dolphin fought back to take the lead in the third quarter, and then in a dramatic final ten minutes Con went ahead, only to concede again with just five minutes remaining, but in the last play, Olan Hanley drew the sides level at 21 points apiece, and Simon Barry performed the coup de gras with the winning conversion.

Simon Barry had all Constitution’s points in the first period. He kicked a 10th minute penalty to open the scoring, and on 20 minutes latched onto a grubber kick by Olan Hanley for a try at the posts. The conversion, and a further penalty in the 35th minute, had Constitution thirteen points to the good. However, Dolphin pulled back seven points just before the break with a converted try by their No.8 from a 5 metre scrum, to leave the half time score: Dolphin 7 Constitution 13.

Dolphin had the better of the third quarter taking the lead in the 65th minute with a second try by their No.8 at the posts, leaving a simple conversion for a 14-13 lead. Simon Barry restored Con’s lead again in the 75th minute from a penalty, but from the re-start Dolphin scored and converted for 16-21.

However, Constitution had the final say, when Olan Hanley scored, and Barry’s conversion put Constitution into the final, in which they will meet Highfield who defeated Cobh Pirates 21-6 in the other semi-final.

Report:

Highfield retained the Dennehy Cup on Sunday morning at Model Farm Road. The final, held over from September, was played in perfect conditions, and Highfield never looked in danger as Constitution’s challenge did not materialise. Playing downfield in the first period Highfield led 16-3 at the interval, and easily saw out the second forty minutes.

Highfield went ahead on 7 minutes with a try in the left corner by No.8 Paul Jacquesson. Dara O’Keeffe added a penalty in the 23rd minute for 8-0. Simon Barry had a chance to reduce the arrears on 25 minutes, but was wide with a penalty attempt. And Highfield notched a decisive score on the half hour, when wing Darren Walsh intercepted at half-way, and won the race to the line. Constitution continued to challenge, and a 38th minute Simon Barry penalty gave them hope. However, Highfield scored again with a second O’Keeffe penalty just before the break for 16-3.

And Highfield continued to dominate in the second period, and despite Constitution’s best efforts, they closed it out with a late try by No.8 Paul Jacquesson in the final minute, again converted by O’Keeffe, for a deserved victory.

Cork Constitution got their challenge for the Junior 2 League back on track with a victory over Mitchelstown in the fourth game of the play-off sequence. The game, played on Sunday morning at Mahon grounds, was a tight affair however, with only a point dividing the sides at the finish. Last week they lost an equally tight game at Highfield.

Simon Barry opened the scoring with a penalty after 10 minutes. And on 21 minutes he converted a try by Kevin Cooke to give his side an 8-0 lead. However, Mitchelstown hit back just before the break with a try and conversion.

The losing bonus point gives Mitchelstown the lead in the table on 15 points after the four games, with Constitution also qualifying for the next phase in second place on 14 points.

Report:

Highfield took the honours at Model Farm road on Sunday morning in the first game of Phase 2 of the Junior 2 League, but only after a spirited fight back by Constitution.

Constitution failed to register a score in the first half, as Highfield led 6-0 from two penalties. Simon Barry kicked a penalty in the 50th minute to close the gap, but a third Highfield penalty five minute later restored their six point lead.

On the hour mark, Highfield scored a fine try when their right wing ran in from half way after a slick threequarter movement for 14-3. Constitution lost a scoring chance in the 63rd minute when a touchdown was disallowed, but they did score in the next attack when Nigel Murphy broke from a maul near the line. Simon Barry added the conversion to make it a one-score game.

And when Cormac Doherty scored in the 75th minute, it looked like it might be the winner. Barry missed the difficult conversion from the touchline, but Constitution now had the lead at 15-14. However, Highfield had the final say with a penalty in the 78th minute.

The result leaves the table as follows after three games:
Mitchelstown  14 pts.
Highfield     12 pts (4 games)
Constitution    10 pts

Next Sunday’s tie between Constitution and Mitchelstown will decide the outcome.

Dunmanway opened the scoring with a penalty after 10 minutes, but Rory O’Sullivan had Constitution ahead two minutes later with a try. A penalty to each side brought the score to 6-8 after 23 minutes. However, Dunmanway took the interval lead with a try just before the break to lead 8-11.

The home side stretched their lead to 8-18 with a converted try in the 50th minute. But Constitution fought back with a try by Troy Kinnane in the 65th minute, added to by Simon Barry’s conversion. However, Dunmanway kicked a penalty in the 70th minute for 15-21.

In an exciting finale to the game, Kamil Fabiszewski got in for a try in the 75th minute. The conversion was missed to leave Constitution trailing by a single point. And then, in the final play, Simon Barry kicked the winning points from an injury time penalty.

Highfield proved to strong for Constitution in the Dennehy Cup final played at a sunny Model Farm Road on Sunday morning.

Constitution played with the slope in the first period, but still trailed 0-3 at the interval to a 5th minute penalty by Jim Ahern. Their best chance came in the 20th minute when a good backs move almost put left wing Kevin Cooke in for a try. However, only spirited defence kept Highfield at bay also.

The game was essentially decided in the 5th minute of the second half when Highfield No.8 Neil Griffin scored from a 5 metre scrum and Jim Ahern added the points for 10-0. Constitution made little headway, and after they had a try was disallowed midway in the second half, Highfield pulled away with two further tries in the final quarter.

Cork Constitution qualified for the Dennehy Cup final with a narrow win over a gallant Bandon side at a sunny Templehill on Sunday morning.

Bandon took an early lead with a penalty kicked by Olan Crowley in the 3rd minute. Constitution hit back from the restart with an unconverted try scored by left wing Kevin Cooke. Simon Barry scored a second try in the 12th minute, that he also converted, to leave Constitution 12-3 to the good. However, just before the break, Bandon scored with a try from Gerry Crowley, converted by Olan Crowley. That was to set up an exciting second half with the home side leading 12-10.

That second period was well contested, with both sides losing a player to the sin-bin. However, scoring was at a premium, and only in the 70th minute did Simon Barry give Constitution a little breathing space with his second penalty.

Report:

Cork Constitution won the Dennehy Cup at Highfield RFC on Sunday against a gallant Mallow side. The much-delayed final was played in near perfect conditions with Spring sunshine.

Constitution played against the wind and pitch incline in the first period and took the lead mid-way in the half with a try by Cilian O’Connor. It was the result of a powerful maul to the line by the Con pack. Simon Barry kicked the conversion, though he missed a couple of early penalty chances, to leave Constitution 7-0 at the break.

Despite having the advantage of the elements in the second period, Constitution made hard work of getting the clinching score, but Mallow had little in the way of attacking capability. The Constitution pack were to the fore throughout and they were well served by half backs Kevin Minihan and Simon Barry. The centre defence of Tadg Buckley and Daragh McNamara was never breached, and the back three of Cormac Doherty, Dave Hayes and Brian O’Leary dealt with every ball that came their way.

A knee injury to scrum half Kevin Minihan interrupted play for a period in the second half, but in the end, a fine break in the 72nd minute by out-half Simon Barry, carried on by Tadg Buckley, and finished in the left corner by Brian O’Leary, made the game safe for Constitution.

It was Constitution’s 19th victory in the Dennehy Cup since it was first played in 1972; the last success being in 2011, when Balllincollig were defeated 13-7 under the captaincy of John O’Donovan.

The Cup was present by Eamon Dennhey to Constitution captain, Cormac Fouhy, after the game, and a special tribute was paid to referee Barry Brunt, who has retired after forty year’s of service with the whistle.

Bandon defeated Cork Constitution in the J2 Cup quarter final at Temple Hill on Sunday afternoon. Bandon went behind to an early penalty, but were 10-3 ahead at the break, and were never headed in the second period, despite a strong comeback by the home side.

Simon Barry gave Constitution the lead in the 8th minute, and at that stage they looked comfortable against a strong Bandon outfit. However, once No.8 Pat Prendergast forced his way over for a try in the 20th minute, that Andrew Willis converted, Bandon gained command thereafter. Willis kicked a penalty before halftime to consolidate their lead.

Simon Barry kicked a second penalty in the first minutes of the second period, but Bandon hit back with a try by front row Mark Phelan for 10-15. Simon Barry missed a couple of penalty chances that would have been vital to Constitution’s cause, hitting the post twice, before Cilian O’Connor finished off a break by Cian Parkes in the 65th minute to give Con some hope. Barry’s conversion made it a two point game, but Bandon’s strong pack closed out the game with a second pushover try, again  credited to No.8 Prendergast. With time almost up, the conversion by Willis ended any hope Con might have had to rescue the game.

Despite gaining an early 17 point advantage in the first quarter, Cobh pulled back to 17-11 by the interval. But Con eventually saw the gallant Pirates off with a clinching try by Rory O’Sullivan in the final minutes.

Second row Cilian O’Connor struck for the first try for Constitution when he latched on to a mix up in the visitors defence after 5 minutes. And Barry kicked a penalty on 16 minutes to bring up 17 points as Constitution continued to dominate.

Cork Constitution qualified for the semi final of the Dennehy Cup at Temple Hill on Sunday morning with a fortunate win over a skilled Mallow outfit. The sides were level at five points each at the interval and at 8-8 after 60 minutes. Mallow then took a three point lead, but Constitution rallied to score the winning points in the final10 minutes.

Constitution full back Kieran Clancy got the first score with a clever grubber kick to the line which he collected for the try. The same player was sin-binned a few minutes later but Mallow missed an opportunity to close the gap. But Mallow got back on level terms just before half time with a smart try by wing Martin O’Connell.

O’Connell gave Mallow the lead 10 minutes into the second half with a penalty, but missed another five minutes later. Simon Barry brought Con level again on the hour mark from a penalty, But Mallow hit back with a second O’Connell penalty to lead 11-8 with 10 minutes remaining.

Darren O’Connell scored the winning try from a concerted Con forward drive. Barry missed the conversion, but Con had done enough to set up a semi final date with Kinsale next Sunday at Temple Hill.

For Constitution, skipper Kevin Minihan and Simon Barry were smooth half back partners, while Kieran Clancy was reliable and inventive form full back. Regulars Cormac Fouhy, Cilian O’Connell and Dave O’Brien performed weel in the pack and were ably supported by Ronan Barry, Fergus Roan and try scorer Darren O’Connell at hooker.

The Constitution coaching team of Eoin Quinlan, Eric Treacy and Paul Derham supported by selectors Don Mullins and Colm Murphy, together with Manager Der O’Riordan and Team Sec. Cork Constitution won an exciting Junior 2 Cup second round tie at Temple Hill on Sunday with a two-try burst in the final minutes. Constitution had led 12-8 at the break, but conceded two penalties to trail by two points entering the final 10 minutes. Then, two great runs from his own half by wing James Sullivan secured the victory over a gallant Kanturk side.

Kanturk took the lead with an unconverted try by wing Sean Piggott in the 10th minute. Cormac Fouhy drew his side level in the 25th minute with the first of two tries. Fouhy scored his second try in the 38th minute, and when James Sullivan added the conversion, it appeared that Constitution had secured a handy first half advantage against the slight breeze. However, with the last play of the half Steve McAuliffe closed the gap with a drop goal to trim Con’s first half lead to 12-8.

Kanturk got to within a point with a penalty by John Cronin in the 3rd minute after the resumption. Play became a little frantic mid way through the half and a melee in the 60th minute led to a yellow card for a Constitution player.  Cronin gave his side the lead in the 72nd minute, but Constitution hit back quickly and two long distance tries in the closing minutes by James Sullivan sealed the victory for the home side.

Constitution will now travel to play Waterpark at the quarter final stage of the Junior 2 Cup.

Cork Constitution J2 XV travelled to Skibbereen on Sunday and came away with the spoil to keep their chances of honours alive in the J2 League. Last week against Tralee they staged a second half come back but came up just short; this week they succeeded with two late tries.

In the final quarter, Constitution got a break when Fergus Rowan scored an unconverted try. And then with the clock running down, second row Cormac Fouhy forced his way over for the decisive score. Skibbereen had a late penalty chance to save the game but their kicker was wide with his attempt.

Cork Constitution travelled to Tralee for their second game in the Junior 2 League second phase and came away with a hard earned losing bonus point thanks to a second half fight back. Tralee led 17-7 at the break, but Constitution fought back to finish just three points down at the finish.

In the team’s last meeting, Tralee had a comfortable win in last season’s Junior 2 Cup final, but on this occasion they were made to battle to the end before claiming the four points on offer. Tralee notched the opening points from a penalty before Rory O’Sullivan ran in the first of his two tries.  However, Tralee replied with two converted tries before half time to lead 17-7 at the break.

Pierre Hadbi kicked a penalty for Constitution on the resumption, but Tralee replied similarly. O’Sullivan scored his second try, and Hadbi’s second conversion made for a tense finish, but the home side held out.

Constitution had a big win against a gallant Muskerry side at Ballyanly on Sunday in their first Junior 2 League game, although the score line did little justice to the home side. Constitution led by a mere 8-0 at the break, but piled on the pressure in the second period to run out clear winners.

No.8 Nigel Murphy led the way with a hat trick of tries and back row partner Shane Desmond added two more, while Rory O’Sullivan grabbed a brace also. Pierre Hadbi converted five out of ten for a comprehensive win.

Constitution started poorly against Carrigaline in this Dennhey Cup second round tie at Temple Hill on Sunday morning, conceding 17 points without reply. It gave them a lot to do subsequently, but a gallant fight-back in the second half was to no avail.

Sean McCarthy and Dave O’Donoghue scored tries in the first quarter for Carrigaline as they outplayed the home side.  A further try just before the break stretched the lead to 17-0.

Pierre Hadbi scored a try for Constitution and Simon Barry added the conversion and a penalty for the home side in the second period, but a well-organised Carrigaline side deservedly advanced to the next round.

Cork Constitution J2 XV got their season off to a winning start in the first round of the Dennehy Cup at Old Chapelon Sunday. Playing with the aid of the strong down-field wind in the first half they led 15-10 at the interval. And while Bandon rallied well in the third quarter, Constitution added two tries in the latter stages and were well worth their win.

Bandon struck first with a penalty from Killian Glynn after 3 minutes. No.8 Shane Desmond sparked Con into life with a strong run on 8 minutes and set up James Sullivan for a try. Fergus Rowan and Darren O’Connell added further tries on 11 and 19 minutes, none of which were converted. A Con player was yellow carded on 30 minutes and Bandon used the advantage to notch a try by Gerry Crowley, converted by Glynn to leave his side trailing 10-15 at the half-time break.

Despite the strong breeze at their backs Bandon made few try-scoring chances and had only a Glynn penalty added to their score going into the final 10 minutes. Con’s forwards were well on top in the loose and created chances for James Sullivan and Rory O’Sullivan in the final minutes to score and put Con comfortably into the second round in which they will play Carrigaline at Temple Hill next Sunday.

Report:

Traleeproved to strong for Constitution in the final of the South Munster Junior 2 Cup at Tanner Park, Ballincollig, on Friday evening. Constitution played with the breeze in the first half, but neither side succeeded in registering any points.

Constitution took the lead in the 52nd minute with a fine try by Rory O’Sullivan. He got possession on the right wing after a fine backline movement and beat three defenders as he ran in from 40 metres. Simon Barry, who replaced captain, John O’Donovan, at half time, slotted the conversion for 7-0. However, the strong Tralee pack battered their way over five minutes later to draw level. Brendan O’Mahony got the touchdown and Gordon Kearns added the extras.  Barry missed a scoring chance for Constitution in the 70th minute when he was wide with a penalty, and when out half Terrence Liston dropped a goal for Tralee five minutes later it looked ominous for Con. Kearns missed a succession of penalty kicks during the game – six in all – but he made amends in the final minute with a try under the posts that he converted.

So a good Cup run by Constitution came to nought in the end. However, they battled well and with a little more time and organisation there will be further opportunities for success for these palayers.

Constitution reversed the previous week’s result between the sides on Wednesday evening at Temple Hill with a thrilling three point victory in the J2 League.

College had won 31-19 in the previous game, and opened where they left off with an early try by Luke Duffy that he converted himself. Con hit back with a Simon Barry penalty, and then a try by Gary Feehan in the 33rd minute. Barry’s conversion gave Con an 8-7 lead. On the stroke of half time, Conor Desmond squeezed in at the corner to give Con a handy 13-7 interval lead.

College reduced the deficit with a try from a maul on the Con line by Dave O’Driscoll, and a penalty by Duffy in the 58th minute edged his side 15-13 in front. An intercept try by College from a kick and chase from half way by Oscar O’Sullivan, converted by Duffy, gave College a flattering 20-13 lead on 64 minutes. But Con were not done yet, and a fine try by Conor Desmond converted by Barry in the 71st minute tied up the scores at 20-20. Cork Constitution J2 XV defeated Ballincollig to win the Dennehy Cup for the second year in succession, and the eighteenth time overall, on the Monday of the October Bank Holiday weekend. On a cool windy day at Highfield RFC, Ballincollig had the better of the opening half and led 7-0 at the break. A try by winger Robert Foulkes, converted by Kevin Ryan just before half time, was the only score of the opening half in which Ballincollig had the benefit of the strong breeze.

Simon Barry reduced the arrears after three minutes of the second half with a twice taken penalty. His first attempt drifted just wide, but when the referee ordered the kick to be re-taken due to an indiscretion by a Ballincollig player, Barry drifted the ball just inside the uprights to land the points. Constitution were the more enterprising side and were rewarded with a fine try by winger James Sullivan after 60 minutes, after play had been held up due to an injury to Constitution scrum half Larry Copplestone. Barry again added the points and kicked a further penalty a few minutes later. Ballincollig continued to drive hard but the Con defence proved up to the task and held out for victory.

Peter Dennehy was on hand to present the Cup to captain John O’Donovan on behalf of the Dennehy’s Cross family who have been associated with the competition since 1972.
